Dealing with Anxiety

“In the mess of things, art comes alive.”

My life is in a bloody mess today. Life before was as if I’m at the beach. Enjoying the cool salty breeze and the wave’s gushing sound while I build a sandcastle. Beside me are fresh coconut juice and a portable speaker which plays a subtle tone of reggae. It’s bliss. I have control over my time and pace. I can build my castle the way I want it to be.

From then and now, two things happened that messed up my vacation. First, I got married. Suddenly someone got an opinion about my sandcastle. Suddenly someone had switched my favorite playlist to Adele. I lost some control. Yet life is still pretty manageable.

Then the second thing happened. My son was born. As I look at my sandcastle, I am glad at least there’s still a lot of sand elsewhere which I can use to start over. Everything I built was virtually destroyed. My speaker now plays nothing but children’s songs. Well, at least I still have my coconut juice. Or so I thought. As I turned the husk over to drink, it seems like it’s been emptied for some time already. Not even a drop left!

Big Adjustment

Recently, Lalaine and I had the pettiest argument ever. We wrangle if we should buy the 250 pesos queen size baby floor mat — because it’s on sale.

Lalaine: It’s cheap. Baby needs it. Let’s buy it.
Jed: It will clutter the room. Baby can use the bed. Don’t buy it.

We debated for two days, and since we couldn’t find the middle ground, we didn’t buy the mat…yet.

Neither of us was right or wrong when I look back from a third person’s perspective. Both of us value things differently. Lalaine sniffs for good deals. And I am more mindful of simplicity.

I am not the confrontational type. I don’t like arguments, and I’m allergic to conflicts. I find all those things messy. If I could, I’d rather have my alone time back at the beach and chill. Who wants a messy life anyway? I bet no one in their right mind except those who want to be great men.

There’s No Shortcut to Greatness

How do you create champions? Self-sacrifice, hard work, and self-discipline. Those are some of the fabrics needed to become one. None of that sounds pleasant to me.

Let’s face it: Who wants to get up every day at 5:00 am to run 5 miles? Who wants to do two-a-day workouts in pre-season? Who wants to push their bodies to the limit so they can become stronger, faster and better at their chosen sport? In short, no one except those who wish to become a champion athlete.

Likewise, who wants to get up every two to three hours to help feed a newborn? Who wants to take care of a fuzzy baby while mom takes a much-needed break? Who wants to apologize to his wife after a petty argument? Again, no one except those who seek to be champion husbands and dads.

There is no shortcut to greatness. But there’s a secret ingredient to it: Embrace the mess in your life. The very burdens we carry for our families over time are what make us stronger men.

The Making of a Superhero

Photo by Sebastián León Prado on Unsplash

“Becoming a husband and then a dad is one of the best things that ever happened to me — it forced me to be a better man than I was.”
— George W. Bush

Research revealed countless benefits to men who are committed husbands and fathers. They live longer and enjoy better mental health. They’re also more productive at work, and contribute better to their communities. Married men are generally happier with life than their unmarried or childless brothers.

Fatherhood turns ordinary men into superheroes. Based on statistics, children who grow up with their fathers are much less likely to spend time in jail. Be drop out of school, fail to hold down a job, suffer from severe mental illness, or become an addict to substances. They are also much less likely to bear children out of wedlock. Thus, prevent the cycle of the social devastation of fatherlessness that threatens our society.

Not only do our family, and civilization as a whole will benefit when we learn to embrace life’s crap. But you and I as well. It will help us become a better man in many important ways.

Expect The Mess

“Where there are no oxen, the manger is clean,
but abundant crops come by the strength of the ox.”

— Proverbs 14:4 ESV

Unfortunately, our society has downplayed the reality of trade-offs in life. They assert we can get all the benefits without the trouble. Nowadays, we can lose weight while watching TV. Get rich while traveling the world. And have a family without commitment. It’s like having a hardworking ox that doesn’t poop.

If your ox doesn’t poop, you know it’s not real or you got one sick ox. Give yourself a favor, stop the hunt for the mythical creature called the poopless-ox. It doesn’t exist. There is no such thing as a poop-free life.

Even so, I don’t advocate to embrace all the poop in life. Too much poop also means the ox is unwell. What I’m trying to say is, life is not about obtaining the state of perfection. It’s about getting the proper positive-to-poop ratio.⁴ (LIFE = +/? )

I went to see a counselor last month. The reason was to deal with my panic attacks. I couldn’t sleep well. Thanks to anxiety, fear, and meaninglessness who overwhelms me at night. I don’t remember inviting them in, but for some reason they’re here with me, happily disturbing my peace.

I’ll spare the details for another post, but in general, the counselor told me that I’m beat-up. My self-esteem runs on empty. She said that I sounded as if I try to catch every falling hair that could mess up my floor. I spend way too much mental and physical energy to preserve a state of flawlessness in my life. — which will never be.

As long as we live, unpleasant things will always be at the door. Sickness, disappointments, conflicts, and others may come in without warning. No matter how hard we try to keep them away.

Good Days, Bad Days

“Life is like the stock market. Some days you’re up. Some days you’re down. And some days you feel like something the bull has left behind.”
— Paula Wall

Life fluctuates. It’s a delight when it’s up, and it sucks when it’s down. But like the stock market, it doesn’t mean one is good and the other is bad. Both instances can be profitable when handled the right way.

The challenge is to enjoy it both ways. Best to treasure, and share the satisfaction when life is well. And appreciate the transformational value it gives when everything feels like sh*t.

Men nowadays validate greatness based on his well-built career. His thirst-quenching bank accounts, and gratifying toys. I’m no different. Those are the things I refer to as my sandcastle, coconut, and portable speaker at the beginning of this post. The achievement of those material things is more important to me than my success as a husband and as a father. — Which is incredibly short-sighted. I’m straight selfish by default.

Today I struggle with the mess, otherwise known as: the family. But I allow it to metamorphose me from being an egotistical boy to a selfless gentleman.

Final Thoughts:

“The only people who get hurt on a roller coaster are the ones who jump off.”
— Dave Ramsey

If I can give one unsolicited advice, it’s this: Hang-On.

Life is less about overcoming, and more about living. Less about taking the opponent down, and more about getting back up when you are down. Less about doing, and more about hanging on.

How do you think branches bear fruits? By staying connected to the Trunk.

We banter about pledges to “change the world,” or “to make a difference in people’s lives.” Yet these are the by-product of our transformed life.

Don’t load yourself down with lists. Don’t enhance your anxiety with the fear of not fulfilling them. Our goal is to not know every detail of the future. Our goal is to never let go.

Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.

John 15:4 ESV

Why Money Won’t Solve Your Money Problems

Money is not the culprit for our financial problems.

Money is only a tool. It’s neutral. How it performs relies upon how we use it. Money may contribute to the solution, but it can likewise make the situation worse. It all depends on how skillful the user is.

The fact that we’re in financial trouble only means one thing: We mishandled the money. We still lack the skills to manage it well. At this level, more cash will only result in a messy-er situation.

So, if you find yourself struggling financially, do not wish for more money. Wish for a better you.

LEARN ABOUT FINANCE

Will Steph Curry’s basketball shoes make us a better shooter?
Can a MacBook Pro make us publish better articles?
Will the latest smartphone improve our business?

No, if we are not skilled enough to use those tools.
Still, we tend to dig for more money than to educate ourselves about finance.

Give me 6 hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first 4 sharpening the ax.

Abraham Lincoln

Do you have a budget?
Are you aware of how much you spend every month?
Are you familiar with your assets and liabilities?
Do you save?
Do you invest?
Are you in debt?

If we don’t have clear answers to those questions, we have some work to do.

OUR NET WORTH IS A REFLECTION OF OUR PERSONAL GROWTH

Our financial status is not based on how much money we have, but on who we are and how well we handle money. Our net worth is a mere reflection of our personal growth.

Wealth is all about becoming, not having. True wealthy people will continue to stay wealthy even if you take all the riches away from them. They are not worried because their best asset is themselves.

On the flip side, give the poor all the money in the world, and they will eventually get back to being poor. That’s the usual case for lottery winners. They’ll move from rags to riches, to rags again.

So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents. For everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.

Matthew 25:28-29

IT IS MORE THAN A MONEY PROBLEM

A money problem is more than a money problem. It’s about behavior, attitude, and character. In short, it’s about us. We are the problem.

In gaming, characters cannot wield weapons higher than their capacity. A level 3 warrior cannot equip a level 10 sword. Why? Simply because he is not yet strong enough to use it. Captain America became “worthy” first before he was able to carry the Mjölnir — Thor’s Hammer.

In real life, however, we adults tend to overestimate ourselves. We rig the system to possess things which are actually beyond our capacity. We operate weapons we are not yet worthy of that’s why we hurt ourselves. See what happened to Iron Man in the Endgame. — Spoiler Alert — He died because neither his body nor his armor was strong enough to handle the infinity stones.

In the same way, we use cash, credit cards, loans, and such, as if we know what we’re doing. In reality, those instruments are beyond our capability, hence the money problem. To fix it, there’s no way around but to become better versions of ourselves. Gamers call it “to Level-Up.”

BE BATTLE-READY

A character levels-up when it gains a certain amount of experience from battle. In other words, we level-up by defeating enemies.

Our enemies live within us. It can be as small as laziness or as big as addiction. In all cases, we should find ways to recognize and overcome them. A commitment to responsibility may exterminate laziness. A new habit may end the addiction.

No matter how we choose to face our foes expect that it’s going to be messy. We should always be ready for battle. There will be doubts, fears, pains, losses, and occasional defeats. But we will win as long as we do not give up.

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.

Galatians 6:9

We’re Pregnant! But We’re Diagnosed with Mega Yolk-Sac

We’re pregnant with baby number two! But our ultrasound showed an enlarged yolk sac; also known as Mega Yolk Sac.

Yolk sac plays a critical role in giving nutrients to the embryo. It’s where blood initially flows. The sac helps develop vital body functions like digestion, protection, and reproduction.

The yolk sac gets bigger and will be visible via ultrasound from the 5th to the end of the 10th week of pregnancy. Then it will get smaller and become undetectable after the 14th to 20th week.

Pregnant Mother

The Ideal Size Of A Yolk Sac

The normal size of a healthy yolk sac is 5-6 mm. Study shows bigger sacs will highly result in miscarriage. Furthermore, there were no live pregnancies recorded for yolk sacs bigger than 7 mm.

Guess how mega our yolk sac is? 9 mm.

And the baby? Alive with a strong heart rate.

The Risks Of An Enlarged Yolk Sac

Yet we appreciate our OB-Gyne for being upfront with the risks. She discussed the possible results of our pregnancy:

There is an 80% chance that we will miscarry.
10% we will deliver to a baby with chromosomal disorders. (i.e. special child)
10% we will deliver to a healthy normal baby.

A Tough Fight So Far

Our pregnancy has been a slug fest so far and this news gave a pretty hard punch to the gut.

Round 1:
May 11, We found out we’re pregnant. (Yehey!)

Baby: 1
Opponent: 0

Round 2:
May 22, Lalaine bled heavily. Ultrasound showed a negative fetal heartbeat and a deformed gestational sac. They also found a big blood clot inside the womb which is the cause of the bleeding. OB-Gyne didn’t prescribe any medicines to keep the baby because the pregnancy is not viable. We’re already miscarrying. We are only waiting for the fetus to come out.

Baby: 1
Opponent: 1

Round 3:
May 29, no fetus came out. We went to a sonographer to check. To everyone’s surprise, the scan showed the baby’s heart beating. What’s more, the sac is also intact, and the blood clot is gone. OB-Gyne said it was a miracle! Pregnancy is now viable. (All glory to God!)

Baby: 2
Opponent: 1

Round 4:
June 13, this is when we learned about our mega yolk sac. 🙁

Baby: 2
Opponent: 2

The next round will be in July. Please pray with us for good results.

We fight by depending on God.

This is one of the toughest bouts we’re in as a couple thus far. Yet we admit all we can do now is to put everything in God’s hands. Creating life is His business, not ours.

We chose to stop all medicines and let the body decide if the pregnancy should continue or not. Our body knows how to take care of itself. It will eradicate anything harmful. As a husband, my main concern is the health of my wife.

Even so, we will continue to be diligent and do what’s necessary to make the pregnancy successful. Timely check-ups, vitamins and such. It’s still our duty as parents to take care of this unborn child.

Final Thoughts

It’s our prayer to have a healthy pregnancy and deliver a normal baby. We will remain fervent and ask God about it day and night. But if He decides otherwise, we will trust His plan. Whatever the outcome is, we know it’s the best.

To our unborn son or daughter, you are a fighter. Whoever you are, mommy and daddy love you.

Summary

Mega Yolk Sac results in miscarriage 80% of the time. But let’s do our due diligence as parents and let God take care of the rest. Fight the good fight.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

Jeremiah 29:11 ESV

Can An Enlarged Yolk Sac Correct Itself?

Enlarged yolk-sac does not correct itself according to our OB-Gyne. It can get smaller and undetectable between the 14th and 20th week, but the risks of miscarriage and chromosomal disorders remain. Nevertheless, there are also success stories where healthy babies were born despite this condition.

Updates

July 10 — The fourth scan. They call it the Nuchal Translucency Scan, or the NT Scan. This procedure can rule out the possibility of chromosomal abnormalities. They’ll do intricate measurements of the baby’s body parts to see if there’s anything off. They’re particular with the nasal bone and the thickness of the clear space behind the neck.

Praise God, all measurements were normal. BUT they found a “mass” in the abdomen area, which is another bummer.

September 11— My wife just had her CAS — Congenital Anomaly Scan. Others simply call it the twentieth-week scan because they are uneasy with the word “anomaly.”

Despite the term, this could be an exciting day for most couples. It’s the day when they’ll learn their baby’s gender. Yet, it’s only a cherry on top, because CAS’ main aim is to ensure normal baby development.

Anyhow, here’s the report: “NO OBVIOUS ANOMALIES DETECTED IN THIS SCAN.”

Whew, praise God!

But our doctor said we need to take another scan next month, just to be sure.

October 11— We decided not to take another scan. There’s nothing we can do about it anyway. We will simply trust God’s plan for us.

December 25— Our daughter, Jrue, came out at 2.6 kilograms with a length of 50 centimeters and got a good Apgar Score of 9 and 9.

Thank you for the prayers. Everything is well, except for her left ear.

We observed a small hole at the side and a gap on the lobe.

Jrue's Unique Ear

Her pediatrician says there’s nothing to worry about. We should only watch out for the hole as it may sometimes get infected.

September 11, 2020—Exactly one year today we learned about Jrue’s gender. She’s now eight months old. All glory to God!
