Supercharge Your Family’s Savings with Digital Banking

Saving is an essential habit for every family. But where you put what you saved is an equally important matter. Based on a report, at least 50% of adults have bank accounts. That means roughly 50% still keep their money in unproductive locations such as safety vaults, cabinets, or under their beds.

In this post I will present to why it is imperative to keep your family’s savings in digital banks.

Summary

A regular savings account doesn’t protect our money from inflation. The interest rates they offer aren’t high enough to beat the rising cost of goods and services each year. Digital banks, on the other hand, offer rates that are beyond the inflation rate. It not only helps us preserve our money, it also makes a small profit.

Digital Banks Give High Interest Rates

The biggest reason why you would want to keep your savings in digital banks is its interest rate. They offer interest rates that are 50 times higher than regular savings accounts, 7 times higher than high-yield accounts, and 3 times higher than time deposit accounts.

Digital BanksTraditional Banks
Savings 3.5%0.0675%
High-yield3.5%.50%
Time deposit3.5%1%

Digital banks can offer higher interest rates because they generally have lower overhead costs than traditional banks. They do not have a physical store, thus they don’t need to spend too much on manpower, lease, and equipment. All the amount they saved is added to the interest rates of their depositors as part of their marketing strategy.

Protects You From Inflation

Ever wonder why it seems like you still struggle financially despite the increase in your savings, salary, or sales? There’s a big possibility that you are not aware of inflation.

As of this writing, the inflation rate of our country is at 3%. It means the prices of general goods and services have already gone up at that rate over time. There are multiple ways to look at this. But for the sake of simplicity, this information also means we are losing 3% of our savings annually. It’s an invisible expense that eats our hard-earned money every year.

Here’s how our family’s savings will look over time due to inflation:

A bar chart on how our family's savings will look over time due to inflation.

Unfortunately, there’s nothing we can do about inflation as a whole. It is a guarantee that the cost of living next year will be more expensive than today. What’s good is there’s something we can do about it on a personal level. One way to protect our savings is to keep them in an account with an interest rate equal to or higher than the inflation rate.

Here’s what our savings will look like when kept in accounts that give at least 3% interest rate per year:

A bar graph that shows how savings look like when kept in an account that gives at least 3% per annum.

Maintains Your Liquidity

One underrated perk digital banks offer is they don’t require lock-in periods, minimum deposits, or a maintaining balance. I’m sure you’ll understand the importance of this feature when you have an emergency fund. Besides higher interest rates, digital banks also enable you to stay flexible in times of need.

So far, no other financial institution can offer this type of service. The table below in a way summarizes what most banks offer: higher sum + longer duration = higher interest rate.

BDO time deposit interest rate table.

Sadly, most people aren’t liquid enough to pay for their emergency expenses. A good majority often rely on their credit cards, which would eventually lead them into debt. I know because my wife and I have been there. It took us a couple of years to pay off eight credit cards.

Your Money Is Insured

Another notable attribute of digital banks is that deposits are insured. If a bank closes, the Philippine Deposit Insurance Corporation (PDIC) will cover up to Php 500,000 of your total deposits. There are many digital banks popping up here and there lately. Sign up with financial institutions licensed by the central bank and covered by deposit insurance.

Watch Out For The Transaction Fees

Most, if not all digital banks are now starting to charge transaction fees. They charge a small amount for every transfer, deposit, or payment you make. It’s wise to be mindful of your transactions to avoid overspending on those surcharges. It will be pointless to earn good interest, only to spend them on transaction fees.

Enjoy It While It Lasts

Digital banks are businesses, at the end of the day. They are here to make money. But based on a report, not all digital banks are profitable. All of them are still operating at a loss and see themselves getting returns in 5 to 7 years. Of course, it’s not a guarantee. Will digital banks be successful in the future? Can they sustain the high interest rates they currently offer? No one can tell for sure. But for us, consumers, it’s our job to enjoy the benefits of their services while it lasts.

Personal Use Cases

Here are two ways I use digital banks for my family’s savings:

  1. For emergency.

It’s smart for every family to prepare for life’s unpredictability. One way to do this is to set aside a sum that can cover six months to one year of our living expenses. The money allocated for this purpose is called an emergency fund.

I used this allocation to fix my car when it broke down last December. Saving in a digital bank made it easier to access money for repairs.

Before the existence of digital banks, I used to place our emergency fund in the money market. It earns good interest, but would take a few days to withdraw.

  1. To build a nest egg.

We recently went on a one-week family vacation in Osaka. It took us two years to save up for that trip. In 2021, my wife and I committed to set aside a portion of our income to our digital account each month. The interest we earned during the entire duration covered half of our food budget in Japan. It’s something we wouldn’t accomplish had we built our travel fund in a regular savings account.

Nest egg is a term used to describe the amount of money kept for a specific purpose. It could be for investing, home repair, car, or, in our case, travel.

Final Thoughts

The benefits of keeping our family’s savings in digital banks are too good to pass up. It’s the only financial medium where you can enjoy growth and flexibility at the same time. The only concern thus far is whether they can sustain this offer long term. As for me, I’ll take advantage of the service for as long as possible.

Rinku Outlet Review: The Spot For Budget-Shopping Families In Japan?

It’s our last day in Japan, and we’re on our way to Rinku Town.

Rinku Town is a district, one station away from Kansai International Airport. This place is great for stopovers or a last minute destination before a flight. Rinku Town spans over 320 hectares, covering a vast area. It has many facilities such as hotels, restaurants, parks, beaches, and a huge Ferris wheel. But those aren’t the reasons we’re here. We’re here because of its premium outlets.

This post is about our family shopping experience at Rinku Premium Outlets.

Rinku Premium Outlets Review

Overall, Rinku Premium Outlet is a great place for families to do their last minute shopping. There is a wide range of popular brands for men, women, and children that offer great discounts. But the best part is, there are playgrounds and comfortable benches where dads and kids can spend their time while waiting for mom to finish shopping.

What we love:

  • Great brand selection.
  • Terrific deals.
  • Kid-friendly attractions and activities.
  • Luggage lockers.

What we didn’t like:

  • Food experience.
  • Intermittent Wi-Fi connection.
  • Early closing time.

  • Meet Nitama, the cute cat stationmaster of Kishi Station on the Kishigawa Line
  • The spirit of Tama, the first cat stationmaster, is enshrined in the Tama Shrine on the platform of Kishi Station
  • Kuroshio Market is a bustling seaside fish market offering fresh seafood, and the tuna filleting show is held three times a day
  • Experience a rich shopping experience in the spacious locale of Rinku Premium Outlets, the largest outlet mall in western Japan

Great brand selection

Henn Na Hotel Dinosaur Front Desk Assistant.
The Henn Na hotels are renowned for their innovative and efficient services. There are two multilingual front desk dinosaurs that will assist you on your check-in.

We are staying at Henn Na Hotel Kansai Airport today. Our agenda is to do our shopping at Rinku Premium Outlets (RPO) before we fly home tomorrow. This is a strategic move because Henn Na is just a 15-minute walk to the outlet and one station away from the airport. As a parent, I learned the importance of eliminating hurry in my life to keep myself mentally and emotionally healthy.

RPO is famous for its great brand selection and reasonable prices. The outlet mall has over 200 stores, making it one of the largest in Japan. It is also conveniently located near a train station.

Cole Haan at Rinku Premium Outlets.
I like these shoes at Cole Haan. Sadly, I still can’t afford it even at discounted price.

I’m not a big shopper, but I enjoyed my shopping experience here. These are the stores that interest us as a family:

Brands for men

  • Lacoste
  • Onitsuka Tiger
  • Cole Haan
  • Seiko
  • Asics
  • Casio Watch
  • Under Armour

Brands for women

  • Coach
  • Coleman
  • LeSportsac
  • Longchamp
  • Michael Kors
  • Samsonite
  • Thermos
  • Zara

Brands for children

  • Sanrio
  • Lego
  • Miki House

You can check the full list of brands here.

Terrific deals

Discount tags at Lacoste - Rinku Premium Outlets

I am a fan of outlet stores. But I have become skeptical about them lately, to tell you honestly. The general purpose of these stores is to sell outdated, damaged, and broken-sized products at a bargain. This is a win-win approach for both business owners and consumers. Owners can turn their hard-to-sell inventory into cash, while buyers can have a great deal for high quality products. I know because I have experience in the retail industry.

But what frustrates me about “outlet” stores nowadays is that they don’t offer real bargains anymore. They look like an outlet, but their prices are already at par with the regular stores. Yes, they have a few items here and there that are sold at lower prices, but 90% of what they offer are not.

Lacoste at Rinku Premium Outlets
Can’t decide which colorway to take. Spoiler alert: I went with the red one.

I appreciate RPO because they offer real discounts, especially at Lacoste. Their deals are so good that I didn’t spend my shopping money elsewhere. Come to think of it, I never bought any Lacoste merchandise in our country. But here, I got myself 2 pairs of shoes, 1 shirt, and 1 belt. My wife got 3 pairs of shoes: One for her, one for Joab, and one for Jrue. She also got herself 3 bags, and a belt.

We also came back the next day before our flight for our final last minute shopping. We can’t get enough of the deals we got here at RPO. If we’re blessed to go back to Japan, we’ll visit this place again for sure.

Kid-friendly attractions and activities

Outdoor Playground at Rinku Premium Outlets.
Outdoor playground at Rinku Premium Outlets.

I don’t know how you shop. But men generally get what they want, then go home. Women are different. They visit all the stores, compare prices, before they decide which items they want to buy. Men can finish their shopping in thirty minutes, while women at this time are just warming up. What about the kids? Well, all they want is ice cream and a playground.

Baskin Robbins at Rinku Premium Outlets.
You can’t go wrong with ice cream.

RPO is an ideal shopping spot for the family. In addition to a wide variety of stores, they also have:

  • indoor and outdoor playgrounds,
  • coffee shops,
  • ice cream stores,
  • and comfortable benches.

Because of this, moms can have her undisturbed shopping time while the kids go play, and dads sip coffee on the bench.

Mario event at Rinku Premium Outlets.
There’s a Super Mario event at RPO.

When we were there, they even had a special Super Mario Brothers event going on. Unfortunately, it seems like the activity is only for the locals. We were getting error messages when downloading the app. In essence, it was like a treasure hunt activity, where you find hidden items.

Luggage lockers

Japan travel with kids

Another thing I appreciate at Rinku Town is that they offer luggage lockers. I usually see this at train stations in Japan. It’s a safe space where you can store your luggage, so you can comfortably stroll around the town. This is big, especially on our last day when we had already checked out of the hotel. We don’t have to carry around three 30 kilogram suitcases while shopping.

To use these lockers, you will need about ¥500 – ¥800 worth of coins. The price will depend on the size of the locker you choose. After you put your luggage inside the safe, insert the coins to lock and remove the key. Generally, you can keep your baggage there for up to 3 days.

If all lockers are in use, don’t worry. Check the shops nearby. Some of them will gladly keep your baggage for a fee.

Intermittent Wi-Fi connection

Waiting for mom - Rinku Outlet Review
While waiting for mom to finish shopping. Selfie because there’s no internet.

One of the downers at RPO was their internet connection. You can connect to their Wi-Fi, but it’s unusable. I’m not sure if it’s always like this, or just the two days we were there. Being online is important for us since we didn’t avail of roaming services. We only depended on our mobile Wi-Fi during our entire Japan trip. We’ve been to Kyoto and Kobe without problems. But since we are going to split up here to give my wife her shopping time, we need to have separate Wi-Fi to get in touch with one another.

In the end, we simply agreed to meet at the Lacoste store after an hour.

Food experience

Nda Nda Pork - Rinku Town

Where to eat at Rinku Town? Here’s the full list of restaurants at Rinku Premium Outlets. The food choices in RPO are a bit underwhelming for our taste. There aren’t any food houses that made an impression for us to try out. We went to the other side, where another shopping mall called Seacle is located, to check. We tried Nda Nda on the first day, and Tokisake on the second day. Sorry, maybe it’s just me. But overall, I couldn’t recommend both restaurants.

  • Nda Nda = 2.5 out of 5 stars.
  • Tokisake = 1 out of 5 stars.

Early closing time

Snack at Rinku Town
8:29 PM. The stores are already closed. There’s nothing left to do but eat.

Rinku Premium Outlet closes at exactly 7 PM. There are shops that don’t even entertain any more customers 15-minutes before the closing time. Again, maybe it’s just me. I’m used to outlet malls closing at 9:30 PM. I just feel like there’s still so much to do in Rinku Town, yet you have no choice but to spend the rest of the night at the hotel.

To be fair, there are still a few shops and restaurants that are still open past 7 PM. We were able to enjoy some dessert, and shop for chocolates and skin care products.

Consider dropping by Rinku Town if you are flying via Kansai International Airport. The stop-over is worth it if you and your family want to chill or do some shopping before heading home. I’m confident you will find great deals from your favorite brands.

Osaka To Kobe One Day Itinerary: A Gastronomic Family Experience

Today is our sixth day in Japan. We still have two more days, but it feels like I am already missing this wonderful country. My personal mission here is almost over. I already took the kids to Super Nintendo World, and I already bought my gaming console. There is one thing left to do: date my wife over the legendary Kobe steak.

Read on if you are planning a Kobe day trip itinerary from Osaka. I wrote about the best things to do in Kobe for one day with your family, including attractions, activities, restaurants, hidden gems, and train routes.

Hotel She, Osaka in Osaka (Minato), is within a 5-minute drive of Kyocera Dome Osaka and Dotonbori. This hotel is 5.2 km from Universal Studios Japan and 3.8 km from Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan.

Our day trip to Kyoto yesterday was a disaster. We had a great travel plan, but we didn’t have the time and energy to make it work. In the end, we chose not to stress about it and simply enjoyed the day with a laid-back schedule. Nevertheless, we learned our lesson and made sure it didn’t happen to our Osaka to Kobe trip.

Today’s highlight is the steak, and we have to be at Kobe before 12 PM. We have a reservation, so we can’t slack like yesterday. We got out of Hotel She, Osaka at 10:17 AM, and arrived at Kobe by 11:54 AM.

Lunch at Steak & Grill Kobe Meriken Hatoba

Meriken Hatoba is one of the best restaurants that serves Kobe steak in the city. They are family-owned and currently ranked number 2 out of 4,760 restaurants in Kobe by Trip Advisor. Meriken Hatoba has a seating capacity of around 10 people. Make sure to reserve ahead of time if you want to include this place in your itinerary.

Their menu is pretty straight forward. But it may change depending on the season and supply of beef. We ordered Kobe beef steak, taco rice, Chinese soup, plain rice and beef sashimi. By far, this is the most expensive meal we ever had as a family. But overall, we were satisfied by the quality of food we experienced here.

As for the service, it’s top-notch. The servers are friendly, especially the chef. Don’t forget to take pictures with them afterward.

Dessert at Est Royal – Motomachi.

There was a delicious smell after we left the restaurant. We’re stuffed, but we can’t resist the sweet aroma. We traced the scent and discovered Est Royal.

Est Royal is a western confectionery shop approximately 20 steps away from Meriken Hatoba. You won’t miss it because of its shocking pink color. They specialize in cream puffs, éclairs, mille-feuille, and crème brûlée. My wife went to the store, then came out with a box. Inside were four pastries:

  • Choux a la crème
  • Chou a la Sable Bagnille
  • Panda shoes
  • Crème brûlée
Box of 4 at Est Royal Motomachi
Box of 4 at Est Royal Motomachi.

The smell hype didn’t disappoint. I love each one of them. But my favorite by far was the Choux a la crème. I hope you are not that concerned about calories… Because Est Royal is a gem you must add to your Osaka to Kobe travel plan.

The snow park was the reason we were going to Mount Rokko. Sadly, they announced that the park was closed for maintenance when we got there.

Rokkosan Snow Park features artificial snow and slopes. The place is perfect for kids to try skiing, sledding, and building a snowman. All necessary equipment is available for rent, so you don’t need to worry about bringing anything.

Mount Rokko Morinone Museum - International Musical Box Museum.
Rokko Morinone Museum – one of the most peaceful places we’ve been.

Heavy snack and educational tour at Rokko Morinone Museum.

We planned to spend the rest of our day at the snow park. But since it was closed, we just let our feet decide our next destination. We eventually came across the Rokko Morinone Museum. “Museum” sounds educational and kid-friendly, so we didn’t hesitate to pay for the tickets.

Rokko Morinone Museum is likewise known as Rokko International Musical Box Museum. This thirty-year-old facility collects and displays vintage musical boxes and other mechanical instruments. They hold daily concerts, conduct musical box making workshops, and also sell ready-made musical boxes.

Honestly, I felt like backing out when I learned what this museum is all about. I’m not a musical person and do not wish to waste my time here. But the Rokko Morinone Museum is more than just a museum. It’s also a place of healing. They have a garden and a café where you can relax and connect with nature.

It’s been a tough year, so I was sold with the idea of “healing.” We stayed in the garden for an hour, savoring coffee, ice cream, pastries, Kobe burger steak, and tranquility.

Night tour at Rokko Alpine Botanical Garden.

It’s 5:17 PM. We don’t quite know where to go next, so we thought of going back to Osaka. Upon walking to the bus stop, we saw people going inside a nearby attraction wearing neon bracelets. Curious, we followed them and learned that a night tour at Alpine Botanical Garden is about to start. We inquired and were surprised that the tour was already included in the ticket we bought at the museum.

Based on research, the botanical garden gives visitors a view of Mt. Rokko’s native flora and Alpine-Himalayan flowers. It grows around 1,500 different kinds of plants, such as cold climate plants, alpine plants, and wildflowers from different places. Unfortunately we couldn’t see any of these because it’s already dark.

Rokko Meets Art at Alpine Botanical Garden.

The point of the night tour, however, isn’t about the flora. It’s to showcase the light artworks and effects in the garden. We didn’t have a clue, but we are actually at an annual festival called Rokko Meets Art. This event usually happens from August to November. Check the dates before adding this event to your Osaka to Kobe day trip itinerary.

Depart Mount Rokko.

We got out of the garden by 5:51 PM and travelled back to Osaka.

Dinner at Ramen Bar Hanamichi.

We arrived at Ichioka bus stop at 9 PM. It was a long journey, and we’re starving. Most restaurants are already closed by this time, thus we only have a few options left. We planned on grabbing something at Family Mart until we saw this ramen place: Ramen Bar Hanamichi.

Ramen Bar Hanamichi also known as Mensho Hanamichi. It has a good ambience and friendly servers. Yet, everything boils down to whether they have good ramen or not. Well… the portion is great. But overall, 2.5 out of 5 stars. Not bad, but also not great. We were disappointed because food is one of the reasons we visited Japan. And we haven’t had any ramen that has impressed us so far.

Day 7 and 8: Rinku Town in Izumisano

And that concludes our Osaka to Kobe one day itinerary. Thank you for reading and I hope you found this post helpful. For day 7 and 8, we went to Rinku Town to do our shopping at Rinku Premium Outlets.
