What Is A Good Mission And Vision Statement?

Here is our family’s mission, vision, and core values:

Mission: To bloom wherever we are planted.

Vision: To bear fruit and multiply.

Core values: C.H.A.N.S.

  • Contentment
  • Humility
  • Activity
  • Non-conformity
  • Simplicity

It is our best version thus far. My wife and I took about four years to write this.

A good mission and vision statement has a clear purpose and principles. They should directly answer the questions, “What do you want to accomplish?” and “How are you going to accomplish them?” And they are written in a manner that is easy to read, understand, and remember.

8 Characteristics Of A Good Mission and Vision Statement

  1. They are harmonious with one another.
  2. They are helpful.
  3. They are practical.
  4. They are purposeful.
  5. They are morally correct.
  6. They are easy to remember.
  7. They are comprehensible.
  8. They can be explained in one sentence.

This also applies when writing a statement for your company.

1. They are harmonious with one another.

A vision is something you aim at but do not have direct control over. You strive, but there is no guarantee it will happen.

A mission, on the other hand, is something you have control. It is an action or behavior you can do repeatedly every day.

And lastly, core values are the guiding principles for your mission.

These three should be written in the sense that they complement one another.

To use our statement as an example, what we essentially aim for is to become a family of givers. We hope to empower people through generosity; and inspire them to pay it forward (vision).

It would be awesome if one day we can:

  • Pay for (not our own) child’s tuition fee.
  • Fully support a missionary.
  • Give someone a car.
  • Build a house for a family.
  • Help an aspiring entrepreneur to start up a business.
  • Open a café, not intended for profit but for hospitality and service.

We intend to be a family who gives their time, money, knowledge, and more, so people can achieve their dreams — or to simply live better lives.

But we’re not there yet. As of now what we can only do is:

  • Pay for the coffee or parking of the person behind us.
  • Volunteer at our local church.
  • Send food delivery to a random person celebrating his/her birthday.

While generosity is not based on the amount per se, there is a certain level of it that we should meet to empower someone. We need to do our best in growing whatever we have right now (mission) to reach the degree of generosity we are aiming for. There is no way we can give what we do not have.

To achieve this, we need some guiding principles (core values):

  • We have to be content and utilize the resources we have today.
  • We need to learn to be humble and understand our role as managers, not owners, of our possessions.
  • We should actively seek ways to grow and multiply our assets.
  • We must develop the ability to think for ourselves and not merely conform with what is popular.
  • We ought to simplify our lifestyle regularly.

I hope you see how the mission, vision, and core values are tied up together to make a good statement.

2. They are helpful.

Being helpful means our mission and vision do not only benefit us. We must also consider how our family, or organization, will affect our community.

Two things we need to identify to be helpful:

  1. A group of people we want to help.
  2. An ongoing issue they are currently experiencing.

A group of people we want to help

These are the set of people you tend to care more, or you find yourself most compassionate about.

Here are some of the examples:

ElderlyDivorcedDisabled
AthletesCareer womenLeaders
ExecutivesSingle ParentsFarmers
InfantsHospitalizedEx-military
Teen momsEmpty nestersOrphans
PrisonersDisabledCollege students
PoorYouthSingles
Young marriedWidowedProfessionals
ArtistsAtheists/Agnostics/Other faithsBusiness people
UnemployedWidowedRefugees
ChildrenYouthParents
HomelessEducatorsNeighbors

Based on our mission statement, “to bloom wherever we are planted,” we generally target the people who surround us. They can be our neighbors, colleagues, relatives, families, or friends.

But we tend to care about these groups as well:

  • Parents/Single Parents
  • Children/Youth/Orphans
  • Professionals/Business people
  • Poor/Homeless
  • Young married

An ongoing issue

On May 3, 1980, a hit-and-run killed a 13-year-old girl in Fair Oaks, California. The driver was drunk. By September 5, 1980, the broken mother organized a group called Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to resolve the issue of drunk driving.

An ongoing issue is a problem your target group of people is currently experiencing that you wish to alleviate. It could be a cause you are passionate about or something you find heart-breaking.

These examples might help:

FamilyChild careHopelessness
TechnologyEducationMental health
SportsDiscipleshipAddictions
EnvironmentAIDSRacism
ViolenceHomosexualityInternational affairs
Domestic abuseArtsReaching the lost
LiteracyPoliticsPoverty
AbortionInjusticeHunger
ChurchEconomyCrime
Medical careHomelessnessCorruption

The issues closest to our hearts are:

  • Hopelessness
  • Broken families
  • Poverty
  • Being in debt
  • Illiteracy

Most of these were due to first-hand experiences.

3. They are practical.

Most of the mission and vision statements I have read look impressive, but they are not actually feasible.

A statement needs a couple of things to make it practical:

  • An action word.
  • A medium to carry out the action.

An action word

It is a simple verb that gives a straight answer to the question: what do you intend to do for your target people?

Here are some ideas:

ComfortInspire
EmpowerSave
CareStop
CultivatePrevent
TrainPush
FacilitateGet better
MotivateHeal
BuildMake
EnergizeLead
SupportKeep

I’ve read MADD’s mission statement. Here is what they have written: (Emphasis on the action words are mine)

The mission of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is to END drunk driving, HELP FIGHT drugged driving, SUPPORT the victims of these violent crimes, and PREVENT underage drinking.

As for us, our top action words are:

  • Empower
  • Support
  • Educate
  • Inspire

A medium to carry out the action

A medium is a talent, expertise, or an asset to execute your actions.

The mom of the girl used her ORGANIZING skills and CONNECTIONS to form a non-profit organization to fight drunk driving.

Here are other examples:

ServiceCommunicationStrategy
CounselingHospitalityProject management
AdministrationKnowledgeImplementation
Hand skillsEncouragementMarketing
WisdomConnecting PeopleStorytelling
ArtsWritingTechnical skills
DiscernmentCompassionCritical thinking
OrganizationAnalyzingCreating
LeadershipTeachingPersuading
MotivationOrganizingRecruiting
PioneeringPerforming (arts)Influencing
Reshaping mindsetsManual skillsFinance
SharingCoachingPublic speaking
CreativeDesigningGiving
TrainingManaging peopleLearning
SportsResearchingInspiring

Clearly, for us, it’s Giving. But it is not because we are naturally good at it. It is actually the opposite. I personally think I am a very selfish person. I tend to only do things when they are beneficial to me or my family. Every action I take has a price.

It was tough when Lalaine and I decided to have Generosity as our instrument. I have checked for alternatives, but it seems to be the one that fits perfectly with what we want to achieve as a family.

I am not a natural giver. But thanks to our chosen medium, I am being trained to become one.

If you are having trouble finding your preferred medium from your strengths, you might want to try from where you struggle most.

4. They are purposeful.

A good mission and vision statement is intended for a specific outcome.

As of March 30, 2020, MADD has saved around 350,000 lives and helped more than 850,000 victims. In essence, their organization has helped cut drunk driving victims in half. They have done this by calling for a stricter impaired driving policy — whether it is alcohol or any other drug.

In our case, it’s simple. We want to empower people, so they can empower others. That is what we meant in our vision statement: To bear fruit and multiply. It is not as sexy when you think about it, but imagine what it will do to a community when they know how to refresh one another.

It would be nice to have numbers similar to MADD. But the truth is, I am unsure whether we even have one person on our list. Nevertheless, we will continue to do what we have to do as a family.

5. They are morally correct.

Humans are volatile and easily influenced. A good mission and vision statement keep us on the path of righteousness. The problem today, however, is that everyone has their own ideas of what is right and wrong. We are now in a generation where moral standards have been diluted to mere opinions.

I don’t know how most people resolve this matter. But what we did in our family was to surrender our moral views to a higher authority. I am not sure what that means to you. In our case, it means establishing our principles in the Word of God.

Each item in our statement is based on a particular verse in the scripture:

Mission: To bloom wherever we are planted.

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” — Matthew 22:37 ESV

Principle: Always give your best wherever you are, whatever you do, with whatever you have. For God’s glory.

Vision: To bear fruit and multiply.

“His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’” — Matthew 25:21 (ESV)

Principle: Our job is to be faithful. Let God take care of the results.

6. They are easy to remember.

Our statements are meant to guide our daily lives. It is only fitting to find ways to make it easy to remember.

Here are some suggestions:

  • Be creative. Turn your statements into a poem or even a song.
  • Pick a theme to associate it with. In our case, we chose gardening.
  • Use an acronym. One of the easiest ways is to use your family’s surname. (E.g. C.H.A.N.S.)
  • Keep it short.

7. They are comprehensible.

Good statements are easy to understand. My children’s ages are two and four as of this writing. Another reason we chose the gardening theme is, so that even they can hopefully understand the idea behind our mission and vision.

How to make your statements comprehensible:

  • Use simple words.
  • Use analogies.
  • Remove the fluff.
  • Focus on one idea.
  • Don’t go too deep.
  • Support it with a quote, a verse, or a motto.
  • Ask feedback from others.

8. They can be explained in one sentence

Last but not least, you know you have an excellent mission and vision statement if you can tie it all together in one sentence.

Can you complete this line?

“Our purpose is to __________ the __________ from __________ to __________ through the means of __________.”

You can easily fill these blanks once all the elements we’ve discussed since the beginning of this post are present in your statement.

See what I mean:

“Our purpose is to (action word) the (target group of people) from (an ongoing issue) to (the desired outcome) through the means of (the medium).

Here is what ours looks like:

Our purpose as a family is to (empower) our (neighbors) from (hopelessness) to (enable them to empower others as well), through the means of (generosity).

For MADD, it may look something like this:

Our purpose is to (diminish) the (victims) of (drunk drivers) by (calling for stricter driving policies) through the means of (a non-profit organization).

Closing Thoughts:

To be fair, I suppose “good” in this context is subjective. Your idea of a good mission and vision statement may differ from mine. But who cares?

If we can be totally honest, do people really take these things seriously? Most of the time, they only see them as mere decorations on the wall.

How about us fellow fathers and leaders? What is the real intention behind our mission and vision statements? Are we serious about it? Or was it only written, so it could make our organization look “professional”?

I, too, have to reflect on these thoughts. Perhaps in the end,

A good mission and vision statement is something everyone believes and follows.

Business Is Not Easy To Learn (Why You Should Do It Anyway)

I have been learning and doing business since 2009.

Many would argue that, because of the myriad of information we can access today, it is now easier than ever to learn and do business. Well, it may be true to some extent. I wrote about how easy it is to start an online business in this day and age. Yet, what is difficult is making it successful.

If you wish to read the post, follow this link:

Is Business Easy To Learn?

Business remains one of the most challenging subjects to learn because of its continuous evolution and expansion. This topic has become more and more complex due to the emergence of the online market. And as a result of the rapid change in the business landscape, knowledge gained today might already become obsolete within the next few years.

Here are the other contributing factors to why it is not as easy to learn business today:

  • Most of them are scams or low quality business materials.
  • Learning business is expensive.
  • Failure is an inevitable part of learning.
  • Some business aspects cannot be taught.
  • Business involves faith.

5 Reasons Why Business Is Not Easy To Learn

1. Most of them are scams or low quality business materials.

I easily get duped when it comes to tools, online courses, books, and just about anything that promises to make my business better. I have bought almost a hundred of them, but sadly, 80% are a complete waste of money.

The majority of the business materials available today are one of these:

  • A copy of someone else’s work.
  • A sample, introduction, hook, or promotion for the “real” seminar or course.
  • An affiliate tutorial for a specific product.
(Affiliate marketing is a way of earning commissions by promoting a merchant’s products.)
  • A glorified lead magnet.
(A lead magnet is a free item or service to be given away in exchange for contact details such as an email address.)

There is nothing I hate more than paying for a course and then being upsold for another one. As business students, we must do our due diligence to look for resources with a true intention of teaching, than of simply making a profit. I have already been scammed so many times that I have somehow developed a spider-sense on whether a material is authentic or not.

If you are looking for reliable business courses, here are my only recommendations (so far):

Income SchoolIncome School is an internet marketing company that teaches people how to create an internet business through blogging and creating YouTube Channels.  Income School is best known for its popular internet marketing and SEO channel on YouTube.
CourseraBuild skills with courses, certificates, and degrees online from world-class universities and companies.
MasterClassWhether it be in business and leadership, photography, cooking, writing, acting, music, sports, or more, MasterClass delivers a world-class online learning experience.

Here are a few more I find promising but have not enrolled in yet: (Enroll at your own risk)

Learn by FiverrLearn from Fiverr is an online, on-demand video classes platform, specially tailored for freelancers and professionals. All classes are taught by top experts, who are distinguished in their fields.
StackSkills Unlimted: Lifetime AccessLearn New Skills & Discover Your Potential with Access to 1,000+ Premium Online Courses on Coding, Design, Marketing, and Much More
EntreLeadershipThe EntreLeadership Framework will give you the path and the principles you need to lead a peak-performing business.
Business Made SimpleOn-demand business courses to develop yourself and your entire team.

2. Learning Business is Expensive

The cost will always be an obvious obstacle to learning. Let us take the prices of the courses I have mentioned above as an example. (Prices may change without prior notice.)

Income School1 year for $449, then $249 / Year (Unlimited Access)
CourseraPrice varies per course (ex. Digital Marketing Specialization) $79 / month
MasterClass$180 / Year (Unlimited Access)
Learn by Fiverr$0 ~ $150 / Course
StackSkills Unlimited$59 one-time payment (Lifetime Access) (Promo) (Was $299.99)
EntreLeadership$250 / Month
Business Made Simple$275 / Year

It was a long thought and discussion with my wife. But in the end, I decided to pull the trigger on MasterClass for its writing and entrepreneurship classes, and Income School to help me develop this blog into a business. So far, they didn’t disappoint.

As a bonus, my wife also used MasterClass to learn cooking. She now makes her own pasta.

3. Failure is an inevitable part of learning.

In 2012, I followed an author who taught me how to use debt as a start-up strategy. The business went well for the first two years, but it started to go downhill in the third. By the fourth year, my business had ultimately closed down.

2016 was one of the darkest seasons of my life, yet I will not change one bit of it if I ever had the opportunity to go back in time. The lessons I learned during those moments of failure are something I wouldn’t learn even in business schools.

  • I learned to be humble.
  • I learned to be more responsible about my finances.
  • I learned the importance of honesty and transparency in business.
  • I learned you cannot hack your way to real success.
  • I learned to stay away from debts.
  • I learned it is always better to start simply and grow slowly.
  • I learned to be more careful about whom I listen to.

Growth is not linear. Most often than not, growing means taking two steps forward and a step back. Three steps forward and a couple of steps back.

I made a painful and costly mistake. It is something I am still paying for up to this day. Nevertheless, I know I will be a better businessman after this.

4. Some business aspects cannot be taught.

Ever wondered why several successful entrepreneurs contradict one another? It’s because there is an element of art in business that cannot be taught. It is a unique skill of a person which may be gained innately or from personal experience.

Leonard Da Vinci’s students may learn all the necessary techniques for painting, but it does not guarantee they will succeed in creating a masterpiece. Similarly, I cannot blame the author I followed for my failure. While the lessons he taught didn’t work for me, they probably worked for him.

Simply put, there are aspects of our business we should learn on our own.

Here are some examples:

  • How to empathize with your customers.
  • How to figure things out on the fly.
  • When to trust your gut.
  • How to build meaningful relationships.
  • How to bounce back from failure.
  • Work-life balance.
  • Search Engine Optimization — There are theories and techniques, but nobody is 100% sure how search engine works except for Google itself.

If you want more, here are 25 Lessons Business School Won’t Ever Teach You.

5. Business involves faith.

Why do you want to study business? What do you want to achieve?

Perhaps we have the same intention. Aside from it being one of my greatest passions, I study business because I want to create a successful company. But what does a successful company look like to you?

For me, a successful business is a business that:

  • I enjoy.
  • Enables me to spend time with my family.
  • Provides a little more than enough financially.
  • Is stable, resilient, and scalable.
  • People will find it helpful or valuable.

Will studying business allow me to achieve these? I hope so. But there is no guarantee.

I enrolled in Income School’s Project 24 last July 2021. It is a course which teaches people how to create an internet business through blogging and creating YouTube Channels. They named it “Project 24” because they believe their lessons, if followed correctly, will enable their members to replace their day job income with their online business in 24 months.

Will I be successful by July 2023? Or did I just waste my money? I don’t know. It is a leap of faith. But I will stick to the end and find out.

I’m sorry, I hope I did not break your spirit. All I intend to do is provide you with some realistic expectations if ever you decide to pursue business studies.

But despite those realities, I still would highly encourage you to go for it.

Here are the benefits of studying business:

  • Many business principles can be applied to everyday life.
  • Business learning opens your mind to many possibilities.
  • It gives you something to look forward to.
  • Business trains you to become a better person.
  • Knowledge is an investment.

5 Benefits Of Studying Business

1. Many business principles can be applied to everyday life.

Even if I do not succeed in business (which I hope not), I still wouldn’t consider my studies to be a waste of money. One of the reasons is most business lessons I learned can be applied to everyday life.

Some of the best examples are:

  • Accounting
  • Marketing
  • Leadership

Accounting taught me how to handle money better. The principles I learned from my studies are highly applicable to my personal and family finances.

Marketing taught me how to become a better communicator. I learned how to simplify my messages, so I can deliver them more clearly.

Leadership taught me how to lead by example. It is an essential skill I am trying to develop to parent my kids effectively.

2. Business learning opens your mind to many possibilities.

I never thought it was possible to make money at home until I discovered internet marketing. This subject introduced me to various ways to create an online business through:

  • Ecommerce
  • Drop-shipping
  • Affiliate marketing
  • Ads
  • and info products.

After I failed my business in 2016, I spent the next six months studying finance and digital marketing. By 2017, I started making money purely online and, by God’s grace, it has sustained us up to this day.

These are the online businesses my wife and I currently operate:

Chromebook Store PHAn online store for Chromebooks.
The Learning Dad BlogA blog about fatherhood.
Lustro Diamonds PHAn online diamond store.
Ribbon Lab PHCustom ribbon printing.
Property RentalThrough Airbnb.

3. It gives you something to look forward to.

I suffered from a mental health problem after I closed my business and was hunted by many creditors. I wasn’t able to confirm it medically, but my suspicion is either depression or an anxiety disorder.

Every day I wake up as if I am merely existing. I do not have any direction or anything to look forward to. All I wanted to do then was sleep. Sleeping was my escape from the overwhelming feeling of hopelessness.

But God is good. He eventually led me out of that dark situation. I cannot 100% explain what it is, but I always tell my wife it is something I do not want anyone to experience.

Lalaine and I fought hard to get through it. We asked for prayers, talked to counselors, played video games, and whatnot. One of the things that helped me get back on track is when I began learning about the internet business. The thought of having an online company brought back the excitement in my life.

Having something to look forward to is a concept I learned in the book by Viktor Frankl: A Man’s Search For Meaning. Viktor Frankl was a holocaust survivor. He said what kept him alive is the hope of publishing a book and seeing his wife again one day.

I never understood what he’s talking about until I got myself in a seemingly hopeless situation.

4. Business trains you to become a better person.

I heard this quote in one of the seminars I attended: “There are no bad businesses, only bad businessmen.”

Though many factors affect businesses, I generally agree with what the speaker said. The reason we learn business is to improve ourselves as entrepreneurs or even as a person. Business is generally about serving people. And if we do not have the right mindset and system of serving people efficiently, our companies won’t last long.

Business more often than not trains us to:

  • Have self-discipline.
  • Work hard.
  • Satisfy our customers.
  • Work well with other people.
  • Be patient.
  • Be selfless.
  • Face our fears.
  • Respect time.

All of these are part of the general components of being a good person.

5. Knowledge is an investment.

All the knowledge you gain is a valuable resource. It is an asset with future returns when used correctly.

An investment in education always pays the highest returns.

Benjamin Franklin

Those words by Ben Franklin have never been more relevant than they are today.

Here are some ideas on how to monetize the knowledge you have gained:

  • Write ebooks with Designrr and sell them on Kobo or Amazon.
  • Create courses and teach them on Udemy or StackSkills.
  • Start a blog or a YouTube Channel. — Check out our recommended tools when starting a blog.
  • Help your kids start their own businesses.
  • Be a consultant or a freelancer on Fiverr.
  • Run a premium email newsletter subscription with Mailerlite or Email Octopus.
  • Build an online shop with SpreadSimple, Shopify, or Wix.

Closing Thoughts

As mentioned at the beginning of this post, business is a difficult subject to learn because it is continuously growing and changing. The lessons we learned are highly perishable. This is especially true when it comes to digital marketing, like SEO and social media. The developers are constantly tweaking their algorithms.

To cut a long story short, learning about business is a lifetime commitment. If you really intend to go for it, prepare yourself for a journey with no end.

6 Best Ways To Learn Business At Home

“The more you learn, the more you earn.” I firmly believe in this adage.

2016 was my worst financial year ever. My business failed, and my creditors were hunting me. All I had left in my bank account was $100 bucks. I didn’t know where to go or what to do, so I went into hermit mode at my parent’s house for the next six months. I did nothing during those times except learn, learn, and learn.

It was February 2017 when I was able to get out of my lair and start over again. Because of my six-month study, I was able to save, invest, open a business, and pay off several debts by the end of that year.

I don’t know who I am talking to right now. Nonetheless, one of you could be in the position today where I was a few years ago. I am terribly sorry for what you are going through, but I am here to tell you there is hope.

Give yourself time to learn. See where it will take you one year from now.

Here are 6 best ways to learn business at home:

  1. Read books.
  2. Enroll in online business courses.
  3. Listen to podcasts.
  4. Join (or create) a mastermind group.
  5. Take risks. Engage in trial and error.
  6. Be a member of Project 24 by Income School.

1. Read books.

Books are always the obvious choice when it comes to learning, yet many people wince whenever they are told to read.

I was one of them.

I’m not a fan of reading since I was a kid, but I hated my financial situation so much that it has transformed me into a voracious reader. I have read more books, cover to cover, during my six-month hiatus than when I was in elementary, high school, and college combined.

Most of the books I read were about finance, entrepreneurship, and marketing. Here are some of my recommendations to get you started:

Money is the lifeblood of any business. It is imperative to start learning about finance first, more than any other topic.

2. Enroll In Online Business Courses

If you prefer a lecture type of learning, then online courses are for you.

Online courses are a series of on-demand videos that can be accessed through different web platforms. Some popular examples are:

3. Listen To Podcasts

One of my favorite ways to learn is by listening to podcasts. It is an efficient way to gain knowledge, especially when you are doing mindless tasks, like cleaning the car or running on a treadmill.

Podcasts are like a series of recorded radio shows that are focused on a particular theme or topic. They are usually broken down into episodes that you can download on your devices through an app.

Here are a few of my favorite podcasts:

4. Join (Or Create) A Mastermind Group

What is a mastermind group?

A mastermind group is a regular gathering of peers to give each other counsel and support. It is a meeting with a particular theme and purpose. A mastermind group is a good avenue to brainstorm, ask questions, share achievements, and be accountable to each other.

If you find you are weak at persistence, surround yourself with a Mastermind Group.

Napoleon Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich.

I am currently a member of two mastermind groups. One with older people who I can learn from. And another group with younger members where I can share my knowledge, and get fresh ideas.

You can find a lot of mastermind groups online. They are usually on these platforms:

  • Facebook Groups
  • Reddit
  • Quora
  • Discord

However, I found most of these groups were only used for self-promotion. I am sure you will find a few good groups there if you look hard enough.

But it is still best if you can be part of a mastermind where you can grow and build relationships. It can be a group with your friends, church members, neighbors, or colleagues. Call a few of them and agree to meet on Zoom or Google Meet once or twice a month.

Here is how a mastermind group usually works

Requirements

A facilitator and learning materials.

  • Facilitator

As the name suggests, the facilitator facilitates the meeting. He presents the learning materials, asks questions, and gives time for members to share their thoughts. He regulates the efficiency of the session by keeping track of the time as well as making sure the discussions are on topic.

  • Learning material

Learning materials are where you will base the discussion of the meeting. You can use a chapter from a book, invite a resource person, or a recorded video from a lecture.

Flow

You can dedicate two to three hours per session (depending on the size of your group).

Let us say you will have your mastermind group at 2 PM:

2 ~ 2:15 PM
Catch up, small talks, pleasantries.
2:15 ~ 2:30 PM
Icebreaker: Discuss an opening question, play a mini-game, or do a short activity.
2:30 ~ 3 PM
Presentation of the learning material.
3 ~ 3:50 PM
Group discussion and sharing.
3:50 ~ 4 PM
Closing remarks.
4 PM
End

Having a mastermind group is a vital element in your business learning because it challenges, hones, prunes, and affirms your ideas.

If you are not comfortable with a group, the alternative is to have a regular one-on-one meeting with a person you look up to as a mentor.

5. Take Risks. Engage In Trial and Error

Failure is a great teacher, and home is the best place to fail because nobody will know about it.

One of the best ways to learn is through experimentation. We take some risks, challenge our hypothesis, and engage in trial and error.

There is a term used for exploiting failure to find success today. It is called “failing forward”. The message it implies is the more we fail, the more we learn. And the more we learn, the better our chance of succeeding.

Here is a quick guide on how to engage in effective trial and error:

Step 1: Ideation
What ideas do I have that I want to test today?
Step 2: Application
Apply the idea.
Step 3: Evaluation
What worked, what didn’t work?
Step 4: Concentration
Focus and improve the ideas that brought good results.

6. Be A Member of Project 24 by Income School

If you intend to go into the content creation business, nothing is at par with Project 24 by Income School (for now).

Project 24 is a program by Income School that teaches people how to create an internet business through blogging and creating YouTube Channels. They believe their lessons, if followed correctly, will enable their members to replace their day job income in 24 months — hence the name, Project 24.

It may sound overpromising, but in fairness to them, they really walk the talk. Some people indeed succeed in 24 months. Nonetheless, there are no guarantees everyone in their program will do the same since success is still dependent on the person’s skill and work ethic.

I became a member of Project 24 last July 2021, and I was blown away by their materials. I have read tons of books, enrolled in various courses, and listened to hundreds of podcast episodes, and by far, they are the best when it comes to blogging and YouTube.

Here is what you get when you become a Project 24 member

What I love about Project 24 so far

  1. Their step-by-step tutorials have saved me a lot of time and money from trial and errors.
  2. Up-to-date industry news.
  3. No upsells. No gimmicks.
  4. Tells me where to focus my efforts.
  5. Gave me a roadmap to follow — which is a big deal.
  6. Case studies of successful online entrepreneurs.
  7. Transparency, sincerity, and authenticity.

I wish I had learned about Project 24 sooner. I bought a lot of tools I thought would help my online businesses. Turns out, based on the lessons I received from Income School, I do not need any of them to be successful in my venture.

You can sign up for Project 24 here or get free lessons by subscribing to their YouTube channel: Income School.

Closing thoughts

We no longer suffer from the lack of information in this day and age. We can all be MBA graduates while sitting comfortably at home. The danger we have to watch out for, however, is the QUALITY of information we are getting.

I take full responsibility for what happened to me, but one of the reasons I got broke is because of a book that taught me how to use debts as a start-up strategy. The lessons worked pretty well at first, but it eventually bit me from behind.

What we should remember as students is that the people behind the books, courses and other materials we consume are also businessmen. Earning profits is their main priority. Most of them couldn’t care less whether they are improving people’s lives or destroying them as long as they are making a sale.

Be sure to stay vigilant and always use wisdom when applying the lessons you learned.
