Which Is Better GSave Or UpSave?

More and more people are getting into digital banks these days because of their high-interest savings accounts. These are accounts that yield twenty times more per year than what traditional savings banks offer. Two of the most popular ones are GSave and UpSave. These accounts are almost identical as they are both products of CIMB Bank. But if you can only choose one, which of them do you think is better?

In general, GSave is better than UpSave. It has a higher interest rate at 2.6% compared to UpSave’s 2.5%. GSave is also easier to manage as it can be accessed by both the GCash and CIMB Bank apps. Similar to UpSave, GSave now also gives free life insurance based on your Average Daily Balance (ADB) starting from Php 5,000 to Php 250,000. The reason why some people still choose UpSave over GSave is because they feel more secure using CIMB Bank’s app than GCash.

Read on to learn more about the uses and the differences between UpSave and GSave.

Girl thinking while holding a blue plastic card.

What are GSave and UpSave?

To put it simply, GSave and UpSave are considered to be high-interest savings accounts. If you are unsure what a savings account is, it is an interest-bearing account offered by banks where you can deposit your money for safekeeping. It is a better alternative than putting your money in the cabinet, piggy bank, safety vault, or even under your bed. This way, you not only minimize the risk of your cash getting stolen, lost, or destroyed, but you also allow it to earn interest.

GSave and UpSave are called “high-interest” because they are giving at least 2.5% per year to their depositors. This is a huge difference compared to the average of 0.0675% from regular savings accounts traditional banks offer. To put this in perspective, here is how much you will earn, on average, if you let an amount of Php 30,000 sit in both accounts for a year:

  • GSave or UpSave = Php 750 (Before tax)
  • Regular savings account = P20.25

It’s like getting an instant coffee from one bank versus three Starbucks frappés from the other. If you wonder how digital banks can offer so much, it is because they have less overhead expenses than traditional banks. They do not need to pay too much in rent and wages as they can operate remotely and employ fewer people. As a result, they have the flexibility to give higher percentages to attract more customers.

But the deeper concern here is inflation. Our country’s inflation rate as of this writing is at 8%. If you’re unsure what this means, it simply means we all are losing money at this rate each year. To counter this you need to find a way to make your savings earn at least 8% or more. Money in a regular savings account will lose its value faster than GSave and UpSave. I wrote an entire article about this topic. Check it out here: Why It’s Smart To Save With GCash Today

A comparison table for GSave and UpSave.

As mentioned earlier, GSave and UpSave are almost identical. GSave is the product of GCash and CIMB Bank’s partnership, while UpSave is solely CIMB’s. The most visible difference between accounts, however, is the interest rate and their x-factors. GCash offers 2.6% and can be accessed by both the GCash and CIMB Bank apps. While UpSave, on the other hand, gives 2.5% and is deemed as the “safer” option.

Interest

When you think about it, does the 0.1% really make any difference? Perhaps, if we are talking about millions of pesos. But let us see the actual gap when we let an amount of Php 30,000 stay with GSave and UpSave for 12 months.

Interest rate formula

  • Nominal Interest Amount
= ((Average daily balance * No. of days in the month)/360) * interest rate
  • Withholding Tax Amount
= ((Average daily balance * No. of days in the month)/360) * interest rate * withholding tax
  • Net Interest Amount
= Nominal Interest Amount – Withholding Tax Amount

Withholding tax amountPhp 13Php 12.50
Net interest amountPhp 52Php 50
Interests earned in 12 months (w/o compounding)Php 624Php 600

On the surface, we can see that GSave’s 0.1% advantage will have a monthly difference of Php 2, or Php 24 a year, for a Php 30,000 savings. This is a conservative computation as we did not consider compound interest in the equation. Compound interest in simple terms is an interest that earns more interest.

X-factor

It is actually up to the users if they consider GSave’s feature of being able to be accessed by two apps as an advantage. Some will see these as two ways to manage their accounts. And others will view them as two doors where hackers can come in and steal their money. It’s convenience on one side and a security concern on the other. But overall, many users felt safer with CIMB Bank than GCash because there were fewer security issues reported.

Yet, it does not mean GCash isn’t secure. See GCash’s safety information here.

Additional differences between UpSave and GSave

Here are other more subtle differences between the two accounts.

Eligibility criteria

Both GSave and UpSave have the following requirements to open an account:

  • For individuals only.
  • Are at least 18 years old.
  • Must be a Filipino citizen.
  • Own a valid government ID.
  • Must have a Philippine mailing address and mobile number.

But there is an additional requirement for GSave:

  • Are fully verified GCash user.

GSave needs to be upgraded

Tap the Piggy Bank icon in the GCash app to activate your GSave account when you have already met all the qualifications mentioned above. Your GSave is only valid for 12 months and can only hold up to Php 50,000 initially. No more deposits or further transactions can be made upon reaching the threshold. To remove these limitations, you will need to upgrade your account by linking and verifying it via the CIMB Bank app.

Can I have both UpSave and GSave?

You can open an account with both UpSave and GSave. I had. But since they are virtually the same, it might be more practical to focus your savings on GSave to capitalize on the additional 0.1% interest. There are no significant differences between the two accounts, especially if you are using the CIMB Bank app to access your GSave instead of GCash. CIMB’s app generally has better options in cashing in and transferring money at fewer, or even no, service fees.

Can I transfer from GSave to UpSave?

If you have both accounts, the best way to transfer money from GSave to UpSave is through the CIMB Bank app. Here’s how:

  • Log in to the CIMB Bank app.
  • Tap transfer.
  • Then, to my own CIMB account.
  • Select your GSave account as From.
  • Then select your UpSave account as To.
  • Enter the amount to transfer.
  • Add a description (optional).
  • Hit next and verify.

You can also use this process to transfer money to other CIMB Bank accounts.

Closing thoughts

Overall, you can’t go wrong when choosing between GSave and UpSave. If you find the additional 0.1% valuable, then go for GSave. If you feel more secure with UpSave, then go for UpSave. Nevertheless, in terms of saving, these two are far better options than what traditional banks offer us today.

Yet, good as they are, the reality is even GSave and UpSave do not have enough firepower to beat inflation. With this I encourage you to explore investing in stocks, bonds, or mutual funds. You can check out GInvest for this purpose instead. But don’t do it without proper study. Do your homework first before investing in these accounts to minimize your risk of losing money. If you want to know how I exactly approach my investments, check out this 5-hour on-demand video course on The Lazy Investor Way:

The Lazy Investor Way is for people who want to have a more simplified approach to their investments.

Do UpSave and GSave accounts expire? Based on both of their terms and conditions, accounts with no financial transaction for at least twenty-four (24) months shall be classified as dormant. Dormant accounts cannot function unless reactivated. By the 61st month (after 5 years), CIMB Bank will start charging a monthly dormant fee of Php 30 from the account.

What is my UpSave/GSave life insurance coverage? You are covered by the amount you have maintained in your account for the past three (3) months – starting at Php 5,000 up to Php 250,000. If your average daily balance for the past three months is Php 10,000, then that is your insurance coverage. If your account is less than three months old, your coverage would be 100% of your current balance divided by 3.

How to deposit into CIMB UpSave and GSave accounts? There are several options for doing this. You can use the in-app cash-in feature and choose whether to deposit via over-the-counter or bank transfer. Another way is to use your other bank’s apps to transfer money to your UpSave or GCash account (if available). You can see your account number inside the CIMB Bank app. Please be informed, however, that many of these options charge service fees.

Is there an UpSave debit card? Unfortunately, debit cards are not available on UpSave. The workaround for this is to open another account at CIMB Bank called Fast Plus. There, you can get a free VISA payWave debit card when you accumulate a balance of Php 100,000 – or when you upgrade your GSave account. You can simply transfer funds from your UpSave to Fast Plus account whenever you need to withdraw or shop using a card.

What is the difference between UpSave and Fast Plus? In general, the difference is that UpSave offers a higher interest rate (2.5% p.a.) but does not have a debit card. Fast Plus, in contrast, has a debit card but gives a lower interest rate (0.75% p.a.).

Is GCash Safe? 5 things we need to know

There are over 51 million Filipinos who now use GCash. As the population of users grows, one of the main concerns we need to tackle is security.

Overall, GCash is a safe and secure way to conduct mobile financial transactions. It has loads of security features such as MPIN, OTP, fingerprint login, and face recognition. Furthermore, the app will also notify its user of every transaction made by their account through SMS. This is to monitor any fraudulent activities that may occur.

In this post, let us answer some of the most common questions when it comes to GCash’s safety and security.

1. Is GCash legit?

The majority of us think that GCash is primarily under Globe Telecom. Well, there is some truth to it.

GCash is a legal entity owned by Mynt — a partnership between established companies, namely Globe Telecom, Ayala Corporation, and the Ant Group. It was introduced in 2004 and has garnered many awards over the years, including being the Outstanding Partner for Innovative Financial Services by BSP (central bank of the Philippines) in 2019.

Knowing the legitimacy and the companies behind GCash is vital since it is no longer just an e-wallet. The app now encourages us to put a larger amount of money into its service by offering saving and investing features. Learning that GCash is backed by reputable and reliable organizations gives us peace of mind in entrusting them with our hard-earned money.

  • Globe Telecom — One of the largest telecommunications companies in the Philippines. It now has an 84 million subscriber base.
  • Ayala Corporation — A company with a diverse business portfolio. It has assets of over $48.7 billion.
  • Ant Group — An affiliate of the Alibaba Group. It owns Alipay, China’s largest digital payment platforms which empowers a billion users and 80 million merchants.

2. Can GCash Get Hacked?

Being hacked means having unauthorized access to your GCash account.

GCash is generally almost impossible to hack due to its sophisticated security features. MPIN, OTP and biometric login are some preventive barriers in the app. These significantly lessen the chances of hackers gaining access to its users’ accounts. If all else fails, GCash has a Customer Protect program that resolves unauthorized transactions.

GCash’s security features

Mobile banking personal identification number (MPIN)Your unique 4-digit number combination. Used to access the app or validate a transaction.
One-time password (OTP)A system-generated code which is sent to your mobile phone to confirm a transaction. The code is valid for 5 minutes and can only be used once.
Security questionsA series of questions to verify the authenticity of the user. Designed to recover forgotten or lost MPINs.
Biometrics loginUsing the phone’s fingerprint sensor to log in.
Face recognitionUsing facial recognition to log in.
Account recoveryIt helps regain access if you get locked out of your account.
Customer ProtectResolves unauthorized transactions made by your account due to technical errors or glitches.

Can someone access my GCash account?

You bet.

With all GCash’s security features, it is still possible for someone to access your account if they were able to get your sensitive data like the MPIN. It is encouraged to reinforce your account’s security measures by setting up your biometrics, facial recognition, and security questions. It also pays to be vigilant against suspicious messages and links.

3. Can GCash be scammed?

Here is the truth: the biggest weakness of GCash is… are you ready for this? Its users.

Most of the vulnerabilities encountered in GCash were due to scams. Many users fell for fake agents, messages, links, and products which made them disclose their MPIN and OTP. GCash has already developed reliable security measures, being scammed is the user’s personal responsibility. They must never share any sensitive information with anyone.

If you have not heard about it, there is a singer named Ronnie Liang who was scammed by a fake GCash agent. Based on his Facebook post, it seems he was initially looking for assistance on a particular transaction via GCash’s Twitter account (which is fake). Instead of getting help, the scam artist was able to manipulate him to disclose his MPIN and OTP, and the rest was history. The fraudster was able to take thousands from his account, according to Ronnie.

What do you think? Was this GCash’s fault? Anyway, here are the top five GCash scams we must watch out for — and what are the dos and don’ts — according to walastech.com:

  1. GCash customer service
Don’t seek help in any GCash social media accounts or messengers.
Do use the in-app Help and Support to submit a ticket or request a live chat. You can also call 2882.
  1. Phishing links — these are messages pretending to be GCash.
Don’t click or respond to any of these emails or text messages.
Do ignore these type of outreach.
  1. Spoofing messages — best described as a level-up version of phishing links. These messages may look like the real thing.
    Don’t act impulsively.
Do check, inspect, and validate first before making an action.
  1. GCash Mastercard resellers
Don’t buy any product from unauthorized/unofficial GCash channels.
Do order your Mastercard via the GCash app.
  1. People asking for your MPINs
Don’t give any information especially your MPINs to anyone. Even GCash representatives will never ask for your MPIN.
Do keep your MPINs as a top secret.

Can someone steal money from Gcash?

Based on what we have learned so far:

It is possible for someone to steal money from your GCash account. That is if you would allow them to. Money stolen from a GCash account is less about the insufficiency of security features and more about the lack of care about your sensitive data. Be sure to be vigilant and acknowledge there are people out there who are trying to steal money from others.

4. Can GCash refund scammed money?

Getting scammed money back in GCash is a bit tricky.

GCash will refund confirmed unauthorized transactions through fund insurance, as stated in their Customer Protect program. Basic users can get back up to Php 2,000, while fully verified users are given up to Php 100,000. Yet, this is only valid for system-related errors. Scam, such as a seller fails to deliver or MPINs being shared, is not covered.

GCash’s Customer Protect program

Here are the details of GCash’s Customer Protect program

Features

  • Advanced risk management — a system to detect and prevent fraudulent activities.
  • Fund insurance — recovers money loss due to unauthorized transaction once proven eligible.
  • Prioritized handling — for faster response time.

Covered

  • Unauthorized transactions — any payment or activity the user did not authorize.
Note: sharing of MPIN or OTP by any means is considered as an authorized transaction.
  • Failed transactions — if fund transfers didn’t push through.
    • When money was not transferred.
    • When the amount or balance was wrong.

Not covered

  • Successful money transfer, but the seller did not fulfill delivery of goods or services.
  • Transactions authorized by your MPIN or OTP.

I appreciate GCash’s Customer Protect program because it not only protects its users but GCash itself as well. As a business person, I understand where the company behind the app is coming from. It needed to find the proper balance between protecting its customers and their business.

Here are two points:

  1. GCash transfers real money from your account like a debit card. In short, payments are as good as cash. It would be difficult for them to give a refund, especially when the scammer has already withdrawn it from their accounts. This would mean they need to give your money back from their own pockets. That is the reason why they use fund insurance instead of fund reversal when giving refunds.
  1. GCash has already put all the necessary security measures in place to make every deal secure. They sure need to give refunds for money loss if it was a result of an error in their app. But do you think it is fair if they were to remain liable for bad transactions due to its users’ negligence and irresponsibility? Furthermore, if GCash is not careful, scam artists can also exploit it to extort money from them. They can simply make false reports of being scammed to make GCash “refund” their money.

Can I get my money back if I have sent it to the wrong account?

Again, based on what we have learned so far:

GCash does not refund authorized transactions based on their Customer Protect program. Authorized transactions are any transfers made that are validated by a mobile PIN (MPIN) or a one-time password (OTP). The ideal way to get your money back is to request it from the person you wrongly sent the money to.

As with being scammed, we cannot expect GCash to return our money or be held liable for our mistakes. We should be cautious and take full responsibility for our own transactions.

5. How to secure my GCash account?

Here are ten tips to secure your GCash account and your transactions:

  1. Never share your sensitive information to anyone, such as MPIN, OTP, name, address, and birthdate.
  2. Get your GCash account fully verified.
  3. Be cautious when dealing with unknown sellers.
  4. Do not click or respond to any suspicious links or messages.
  5. Activate biometrics or face recognition login.
  6. Do not use your birthdate as your MPIN.
  7. Deal only with legitimate merchants as much as possible.
  8. Do not put all your money in GCash.
  9. Only transact via official GCash channels.
  10. Always double-check the recipient’s number before sending the payment. Better yet, pay via QR code.

Bonus: If you are making a big purchase, use a credit card instead. Credits are easier to dispute and file for a refund if the seller is a fraud.

Closing thoughts

In general, GCash is a safe and convenient way to send and receive money. But we should also do our part in keeping our transactions secure.

Why Use GCash? Here are 9 reasons why you should

GCash started as a regular e-wallet where you could conveniently send and receive money using your phone. Today, it offers you so much more than that.

1. Conveniently send and receive money in a variety of ways

Let us start with the basics. Sending and receiving money is the heart of GCash, and there are many ways to do it now:

GCash to GCash

There are four ways to send money to another GCash account.

  • Express send for basic transfers. Just input the mobile number of the receiver, the amount to transfer, a short message (optional), and you are done.
  • Send via QR is mostly used for in-person transactions. You will often see this in grocery stores where the GCash codes are displayed on the payment counter. Simply open the app, tap on ‘Pay QR’, scan the code, and input the amount to pay.
  • Send with a clip is similar to express send. But this option enables you to attach a photo, video, or an audio clip to make your transfer extra special.
  • Ang pao or pamasko allows you to send money as gifts to up to 10 GCash accounts at once.

GCash to non-GCash

There are two ways to transfer money from GCash to those who do not have GCash accounts.

  • Bank transfer is used to move funds directly to bank accounts or other digital wallets.
  • GCash padala are for people who do not have both GCash and bank accounts. They can pick up the transferred money from accredited outlet stores instead.

Receiving Money

  • Generate QR and Request money is the reverse version of express send and send via QR.
  • KKB or in other words, “Kanya-kanyang bayad” is used for splitting the bill. In essence, you may have already paid for the item or service, and are only collecting your friends and family’s share.

2. Make your money grow by saving and investing

This is my favorite feature of GCash. It now enables us to save and invest within its app.

GSave

GSave is a digital savings account where you can earn up to 4.1% interest per year. It is a product of GCash’s partnership with CIMB Bank, and it can be accessed by both of their apps. GSave is a safe and easy way of keeping and growing your money. It does not require an initial deposit, a maintaining balance, and has no lock-in period.

You can read my post about GSave here to learn more: Why It Is Smart To Save With GCash Today.

GInvest

GInvest is a feature in GCash where it allows you to invest in various funds such as the money market, bond, equity, and global feeder funds. This is a joint venture between GCash and ATR Asset Management Inc or ATRAM. GInvest is an ideal investment solution for beginners since they can start their investing journey for as low as fifty pesos.

I also wrote about GInvest in a separate post: How Do You Earn in GInvest? (Simplified, Tips, Stats)

3. Never miss paying your bills on time

If you are the type of person who keeps on forgetting your monthly dues, then GCash is here to help you. Besides giving you an easier way to pay your bills, the app can also remind you of your due dates.

4. Buy load on demand

One of the saving “hacks” my wife and I did was we downgraded all our mobile postpaid plans to prepaid. Since 90% of our communication is done through our home Wi-Fi, we do not need a monthly subscription for calls and texts. We can now simply load our prepaid whenever necessary through GCash.

It has been a year, and we did not feel the gap in our communications. Nevertheless, our pockets surely felt happy as we have saved about a total of Php 15,000 in phone bills.

Prepaid insurance

Furthermore, you also have the option to send the load to another GCash user.

5. Take advantage of the rewards

I am not into rewards, but if you do, you sure will love this GCash feature.

Alipay+ Rewards

Alipay+ rewards offer free vouchers and discount coupons with GCash. Users can now enjoy special deals on food, entertainment, delivery services, groceries, and online shopping by claiming them inside the app. Some well-known brands that are in A+ Rewards are McDonald’s, Jollibee, Mobile Legends, Food Panda, Viu, Spotify, SM, and Google.

6. Get an extra hand in case of emergencies

I do not advocate borrowing money or getting any kind of loan. Lalaine and I have experienced the damaging effects of debts, and that spurred us to focus all our efforts on paying them off. We have already killed all eight of our credit cards and we no longer desire to go back to that situation ever again. Yet, of course, we understand the reality of emergencies. Ideally, we should have at least six months’ worth of our living expenses saved in our bank accounts to cover these kinds of situations. But until we get there, a sort of credit line can help us in times of trouble. Here is where GCash can give us a hand.

GCredit

GCredit functions like a credit card. Once approved, you can get up to Php 30,000 credit line that can be spent on GCash’s partner merchants. GCredit is exclusively available to users who have reached a certain credit score known as GScore. You can increase your score by using the GCash app regularly.

Activities in GCash that will increase your GScore:

  • Cash-in
  • Pay via QR code
  • Pay bills
  • Invest
  • Save

GInsure

GInsure is an insurance marketplace inside the GCash app. It offers insurance for both life and non-life. You can get insured for medical, accidental, income loss, and third-party liabilities. For non-life, it has insurance for vehicles, mobile phones, and online shopping transactions. Some participating insurers are Singlife, eTiQa, BPI MS, and more.

GLoan

Qualified GCash users can get loans amounting from Php 5,000 to Php 25,000 via GLoan. This service is more geared toward business owners who need a boost in their operating funds. GLoan’s terms of payment are from nine to twelve months. The overall loanable amount and payment terms will vary depending on the person’s GScore.

7. Help save the planet by restoring the forests

If you have a passion for saving the planet, GCash has a feature for you too.

GForest

GForest gives you the power to plant a digital tree in the GCash app. And for every tree you planted, they will plant a real one on your behalf in their partner’s eco-parks. You can do this by accumulating enough green energy points to purchase a digital tree. Green energy points are earned by walking and using the GCash app.

Here’s how GCash GForest works

  1. Earn green energy points by doing environmentally-friendly activities.
  2. Open GForest to collect the energy points — a day after your transactions.
  3. Pick a tree to plant once you have earned enough points.

8. Earn extra cash with a GCash side hustle

If you have an existing store, you can use this GCash feature to earn side hustle income.

GCash Po (Pera Outlet)

GCash Po allows an established store to earn extra by turning it into a GCash hub. This feature enables an outlet to become a payment and remittance center that offers cash-in and cash-out services. Some benefits of being a GCash outlet include free cash-in, earning weekly bonuses, and improving the store’s credibility.

How to earn money with GCash Po

  1. Remittance center
  2. Cash in and cash-out services
  3. Payment center
  4. Regular bonus

These are the requirements for applying for GCash Po

  • Verified GCash account
  • Barangay Business Permit, DTI Registration, or Mayor’s Permit
  • Store photos
GCash Po
To find GCash Po in the app, you need to click on the ‘view all GCash services’ on the dashboard.

9. Over 51 Million Users

GCash now has over 51 million users across the Philippines as of the end of 2021. This is big for online entrepreneurs like me. I operate a laptop store and most of my transactions are done over the internet. GCash has been a huge part of my business success as it allows my customers to easily pay for their orders. As GCash users grow, so do the consumers who can avail themselves of products and services online.

Closing thoughts:

With GCash, you can bank, invest, pay, earn, buy, eat, drink, plant, play, watch, and more. It is no longer your typical e-wallet. It’s more of an entire shopping mall in your pocket.
