4 Reasons Why It Is Worth It To Start An Online Business

Starting an online business can be scary. There are lots of uncertainties that make us wonder whether it is worth the effort or not. I understand where you are coming from. I, too, had the same dilemma when I started to focus my resources on the internet several years ago. Who wants to spend time and money on something that will yield no return?

Yet today I can confidently say I made the right call in taking the plunge. Having an online business is one of the best things that has happened in my life. If you are on the fence about taking your efforts on the web, I hope you will find this post helpful.

Here are the reasons why starting an online business is totally worth it.

If you want to read the backstory on how I made the decision to go 100% online, check it out here: Assets and Liabilities Management: Our simple plan to financial freedom.

1. It greatly reduces overhead costs.

This alone made my transition from offline to online worth it. I saved about $5,000 on monthly expenses when I closed down our brick-and-mortar stores and started working at home. The move I made immediately gave me a return on investment.

Here is an overview of my savings each month:

No more rent– $700
No more wages– $1,140
Less commute– $152
Kids can now be homeschooled– $116
Home and work share the same utilities– $100
Miscellaneous (Food, clothing, etc.)– $792

2. It can earn income passively.

I dislike the phrase “passive income” because of how people use it to conduct deceptive schemes. I feel like throwing up every time I hear people say it. Yet, I cannot think of a better way to describe one of the main reasons why I invested in online businesses.

If you haven’t heard about passive income, it is a way of earning money without active participation. It is income that is not too much attached to time and effort. Some examples of passive income streams are rentals, dividends, royalties, interest, product sales, and more.

This is the first image I ever posted when I got into the internet business. It is special to me because this photo gave me earnings of about $9,600 in two years. — and it took me what, thirty minutes? To shoot, edit, write a caption and upload it online. Even today, I still get some inquiries about our bus rental service. Unfortunately, I have already pivoted to another business ever since Covid-19 obliterated it.

Starting an online business is worth it, especially for us dads. Many people wonder how my wife and I found the time to work while parenting two kids. Well, here is your answer. There are no other avenues right now where we can publish content for less than an hour and spend the rest of the day with our children — and still earn a decent income. I’m sorry for the little exaggeration with the time, but I hope you got my point.

Of course, having an online company does not imply we do not need to do anything. There is still a lot of work to do, but at least we are not paid based on our time. We are paid based on the quality of content we put online.

3. Online businesses are always open.

Another reason why online businesses are worth investing in is that they have the potential to make sales 24/7. It needs a little technical know-how to work, but businesses on the web are generally always open.

Based on a study of 1,000 people, 60 percent say they have made online purchases from 12 am to 4 am. Unless you hire people or make yourself stay up during those hours, there is no other way of serving late-night shoppers than having a website.

With the right funnel system or workflow, websites can take care of our businesses automatically while we sleep. To give you a better idea, here is the simplified workflow of Chromebook Store PH:

STEP 1: AWARENESS
Our workflow begins when a person visits our website or Facebook page. We generally use search engine marketing and Facebook ads to create awareness and drive traffic to our sites.
STEP 2: ENGAGEMENT
Once there’s a visitor, our website will serve them valuable content such as photos, videos, and articles relating to our products. There is also a chat button where they can get answers to frequently asked questions.
STEP 3: CONVERSION
After engaging our audience, the next step is to encourage them to act. Our two main calls to action are ‘chat with us’ and ‘buy now’.

People who are ready to make purchases can use the buy now button to pay for their orders. As for those who have further inquiries, they can leave their questions via the chat button.

We manually schedule deliveries and respond to queries during office hours.
STEP 4: RETARGET
After a successful transaction, our customers will receive a request to give us a review, sign up to our mailing list, or a referral.

Rinse and repeat.

It will take time to put an automation like this in place. But once it is up, you will be serving more customers around the clock.

4. Online businesses are here to stay.

Confession time: I actually didn’t want to have an online business. I had a stigma about them not being real businesses. Can you seriously build a company with pictures, videos, and texts? I was skeptical. I did not think anyone can earn real money on the internet.

But we all know how wrong I was now.

Based on a report, even in the season of a pandemic, global e-commerce retail sales are projected to hit a new high of $4.9 trillion by the end of 2021. That’s a 256% growth rate from $1.3 trillion in 2014!

But here is a more interesting stat, e-commerce sales are consistently chomping on the worldwide retail market. Purchases made online are expected to take up 17.5% of the total global retail sales by the end of the year.

Our efforts on the web are worth it because online businesses are here to stay. They are not a fad. E-commerce is legit and it is growing every day.

Bonus: It’s fun.

Can there be more worth it than our ability to enjoy work?

According to a global poll conducted by Gallup, 85% of people hate their jobs. And one of the top reasons why they are unhappy with their career is because of meaningless work.

This is perhaps one of the most overlooked opportunities online: the freedom to create businesses around our passions.

Question: What are you doing right now that you were already doing ten years ago, and would like to continue doing ten years from now, regardless of the situation?

This is what we asked ourselves when my wife and I were brainstorming for our online businesses. My answer was writing and hers was working with diamonds. And that is the reason why I have this blog today, and she has an online jewelry store.

The internet is a place where work and play can co-exist.

What about you?

The World Wide Web is always changing. Despite the information presented above, no one can say for sure what will happen to the online industry in the next few years. We see its historical data, we see its potential. But aside from that, we cannot promise what future e-businesses will have. There is also no guarantee whether we will make good money or not.

But if we find joy and meaning in what we are doing every day, it is already worth it.

Is It Hard To Start An Online Business?

Having an online business is one of the many blessings I enjoy in my life. It is something I thank God for every day. To be honest, I’m not sure if I would ever want to run a brick-and-mortar company again. Having an online business gives me the privilege of working and being with my family at the same time.

I hope all fathers can provide for their families while being physically present with them. Ten years ago, that statement would have sounded silly, or even childish. But thanks to the internet, everyone today can start their own company at home — and it is not even that difficult.

Online businesses are generally easy to start nowadays. Even non-technical entrepreneurs can build their businesses online because of the countless tools, programs, and tutorials available on the web. An internet-based company can literally take minutes and only a few dollars to set up.

5 reasons why starting an online business is easier than ever

1. Low start-up capital

One of the biggest hurdles in starting a business is capital. Many people want to set up their own companies, but they do not have the money to make it happen. This is not an issue when it comes to online businesses. We can start something noteworthy at a minimal cost.

I was able to put up my Chromebook business for $500 two years ago. I’m sure others can do it at a lower cost, but five hundred dollars is already a reasonable amount in general.

In case you are curious about how I spent my initial capital, here is the breakdown:

Facebook page$0
Logo and banner design$20
3-month Facebook Ads$60
Inventory$420

As you can see, the bulk of the capital was spent on stocks. I bought a couple of laptop units and promoted them via Facebook ads. To do this, I signed up for a free Facebook Page and created a shop there. I then shelled out twenty bucks to make the page look legit.

2. Easy to follow step-by-step tutorials or courses

Even non-tech-savvy entrepreneurs will find it convenient to start a business online because of the numerous tutorials available on the web.

This blog is another online business I am currently working on. I was a little overwhelmed when I started because of the various elements I had to assemble to make it work. I needed a domain, a web host, a content management system, and a theme. But thanks to Google and YouTube, I got it working in no time. If you want to learn about them, I have written a short guide here: WordPress Hosting & Themes.

Whatever business you wish to venture into today, chances are there is a step-by-step guide you can follow to get it started.

Of course, as we move forward, we will discover more things we should learn about. Some examples are plug-ins, search engine optimization (SEO), and monetization. These are advanced topics that are usually tackled further in a course than in a simple tutorial.

I recently enrolled myself in a blogging course by Income School. It is quite an investment, but I have learned a ton of vital information and techniques so far. It taught me how to research a topic, how to structure my posts, and where to focus my efforts. I appreciate how much time this course has saved me from trial and error. 3. Access to a variety of suppliers around the globe

Not sure what products to sell? You can check out what is trending on Alibaba, AliExpress, or Amazon. Once you have zeroed in on a product, contact a supplier you wish to deal with on those platforms. You can do a buy and sell type of business, or create a dropshipping company.

If you are the type who does not want to shell out too much cash, you might want to try out affiliate marketing.

Affiliate marketing is when you promote other people’s products and earn commissions on every successful deal. Some of the most popular affiliate marketplaces are ShareASale, ClickBank, and Rakuten.

Here are my top 3 affiliate programs:

With the myriad of suppliers you can reach out to around the globe, your online business will always have something to sell.

If all else fails, you still have the option to build a profitable online business around your skills, talents, and knowledge. You can do freelance work at Fiverr, create a course with Teachable, or publish ebooks with Designrr.

4. Growing support for online entrepreneurs

It is now possible to start an online business by yourself. Hiring people or building infrastructures is no longer a requirement when starting up. There are now a growing number of companies that offer various support to e-entrepreneurs. We can now outsource areas in our businesses that are beyond our capabilities or expertise.

Some examples are:

  • Logistics
  • Web development
  • Digital marketing (such as social media management, SEO, and email marketing)

Here are the things I outsource:

Images (Such as logos, infographics and banners) = Fiverr & Canva

Photos = Derrick Lim Photography & PicJumbo

Social Media Management = Social Champ & Promo Republic

Email Marketing = MailerLite & EmailOctopus

5. Plug and play options

If you do not have time to build your company from the ground up, what you can do is sign up for an e-commerce platform. These are sites or services which allow you to put up your online business in minutes. All you have to do is subscribe to a plan, choose a design, and upload your products.

There are two options you can choose from:

  • E-commerce Marketplace
  • E-commerce Builder

To put it simply, an e-commerce marketplace is like a shopping mall and the builder is a stand-alone store.

When you subscribe to an e-commerce marketplace, you are basically opening your shop inside a mall. You will rely on its traffic and submit to its rules. Some examples of an online marketplace are Lazada, Shopee, Amazon, and AliExpress.

E-commerce builders, on the other hand, will give you all the tools you need to create an independent store. You will have the freedom to do things on your terms, but the same goes with your traffic. You need to do your own advertising and promotions to drive people to your sites. Examples of e-commerce builders are Shopify, Wix, Ecwid, and SpreadSimple.

Closing thoughts: Online businesses are easy to start, but…

I would like to re-align your expectations before I close this post. Yes, it is easy to start an online business, but… it is difficult to make it successful.

I have been working online since 2017, and I still feel like a newbie.

Here are the 4 major challenges I have observed in the online industry:

Copycats — Since starting an online business is easy, it is also easy for people to copy (or even steal) what you have built.

Constant change — The internet is changing fast, and it is difficult to keep up. Your strategy may work today, but it is not guaranteed if it will still work next month.

Trust — Trust is the name of the game online. One negative review can be detrimental to your business.

Stigma — Some people think online businesses are not real businesses. One of my clients recently backed out on a deal because she learned we only have an online store. She says she cannot trust a company that does not have a physical location.

I hope these hurdles did not deter you from starting your own online company. Although it is a jungle out there, building online businesses is the most rewarding work I have ever done.

Can Parents Spend Their Children’s Money?

I used to have a bamboo coin bank. Every day, after school, I would drop a few dimes in as I was saving up for a pack of basketball cards. Like every kid, I would often shake my coin bank to check if it was almost full. My age was probably twelve or thirteen. Yet, I can still remember the excitement of buying something I want with my own money.

Unfortunately, it did not happen yet that time.

I came home one day and found my bamboo coin bank missing. I searched the entire house and could not find it anywhere. Anger and sadness filled my heart.

Who took my money?

Who could do such a thing?!

I cried because I recalled all the meals I skipped and the extra kilometers I walked only to save more money for my toy. All those sacrifices were for nothing.

But what truly broke my heart is when I found out who took my money. It was not until the weekend when I saw the empty shell of my bamboo coin bank on top of my parent’s office table.

“How much did I save?” I asked.

“About four hundred pesos,” they answered.

It is not illegal for parents to spend their children’s money, but it is not something you would want to practice regularly. It should come as a last resort and should be done with their permission. Spending our children’s money without their approval may lead to various relational issues like mistrust and passive-aggressiveness.

Why do most parents spend their children’s money? Here are some of the reasons:

“It is my money.”

I am not sure up to this day if my parents ever pondered about that bizarre incident. Did they find it odd breaking their child’s coin bank? Or did they think it was completely normal since the content came from their wallets anyway? This seems to be an ordinary phenomenon for most parents.

According to a survey, almost HALF of the parents admit to spending their children’s money — and 51% do not even feel guilty about it.

Some parents, anyway, reason that they are the ones who seeded the piggy bank or savings account in the first place. If the need is great enough, they don’t need permission to take it back.

Dan Kadlec, Times.com

Overall, only 17% said they had never taken money from their kids — either because they cared for their future, or because they knew they would feel guilty if they did.

What do you think? Both sides seem to have a point.

But as I reflect on it today, I cannot imagine myself secretly raiding my children’s coin banks. I would find it weird to demand or coerce my kids to return the money I have already given them. It is their money now. They can do whatever they want with it.

“My children might mishandle the money.”

Another reason why parents spend their children’s money is because “they might mishandle it.” It is a valid concern, but how does spending their savings help them get better at money management? Would it not make sense to let them handle their finances even more?

Our children will make dumb money decisions. Count on it. Everyone goes through that phase since it is a part of learning. Yet, oftentimes we are more concerned about the money going to waste, than the lessons our children can learn. — Which is more valuable.

Where my parents spent my savings will always be a mystery to me. Nevertheless, I am sure they used it on something more important than basketball cards. They did a great job at preventing the sum of four hundred pesos from going to waste, but I cannot say the same about educating their son.

What I learned then was to never save money again because, what’s the point? My parents can simply take it away anytime they want. — That is how I have, at least, processed the situation growing up. So, ever since, I always make sure my wallet is empty before going home.

But now I understand where my parents are coming from. It is not cheap to raise a family. Every peso counts. As parents, you have to do whatever it takes to provide for your family. — even if it sometimes goes against your principles.

Mom and dad endured a lot for us to stay in school. It is love and sacrifice I cannot repay in a million years. Yet, it was also an idea I knew nothing about as a kid. If they had only communicated our financial woes with me, I would have had a much different takeaway back then.

Raiding the piggy bank without discussion also sends the signal that money is not something to talk about at home… They (children) would benefit immensely from straight talk about saving, investing and budgets–and financial struggle.

Dan Kadlec, Times.com

“I do not know what to do with my children’s money.”

It was your son’s birthday. He received a bunch of money as gifts. What will you do with it?

I’ll give you a few seconds to think…

Chances are you are already thinking about the upcoming bills or your debts. Many parents spend their children’s money because do not know what to do with it.

We had the same struggle as first-time parents. We did not know whether to:

A. Give money to the kids.

B. Add it to our household budget.

C. Invest it on their behalf.

D. All the above.

In the end, my wife and I decided to go for D, all the above. We split the money and put it in their respective funds:

Give money to the kids

Money has the potential to harm our kids. It is a topic I tackled in another post: Why Money Will Not Solve Your Money Problems. For this reason, we only give five to ten percent of their money-gifts to let them buy something they want.

As of this writing, my son is four and my daughter is two. They are still incapable of managing their finances. — although we are already introducing them to the concept of money. So, in the meantime, we will handle the money for them.

Add it to our household budget

I know what you are thinking, “But Jed, you said we should only spend our children’s money as a last resort; and with their permission?”

Correct, that is why I only credit the money to our children’s fund. It is a category in our budget dedicated to children-related expenditures. In short, they will be the ones who are going to benefit from their contributions.

We allocate ten to fifteen percent of the gift as their “tax” which we can spend on their education, social events, and general needs.

Invest it on their behalf

Whatever amount remains, we put it in an aggressive investment vehicle such as the Index Fund. The intention is to make their money grow until they are ready to take care of their finances. We do not want to rob them of the opportunity of having a headstart fund in the future.

Closing Thoughts

These are trying times. There were instances when I am also tempted to pinch from my children’s money. Why wouldn’t I? Who is going to get mad anyway? My children are not even aware of their assets.

But Lalaine and I have established an imaginary fence that separates what is ours from theirs. It is a healthy boundary where we say to our children, “We respect you, and we will never take advantage of you.”

In times of great need, I may ask them to contribute. I, of course, would be happy and proud when they help out. But I also would not take it against them if they decided otherwise.
